"You don't have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them."
Ray Bradbury

For two years, you will focus on becoming stronger readers. This will allow you to excel as reading is an integral part of every subject. We will study active reading strategies as we read fiction and nonfiction text. Our vocabulary study will focus on word stem and root word knowledge; this knowledge will allow you to break down words to determine the basic meaning. Seventh grade consists of a genre study; we will read, analyze, and discuss a variety of genres such as historical fiction, mystery, and nonfiction (i.e. biographies, autobiographies, and newspapers). In eighth grade, we venture into other types of reading while still continuing our focus on active reading strategies. For example, we will analyze a variety of propaganda and determine the messages they convey. Regardless of what we are studying, make sure you are actively taking part in all classroom discussions. In order to enhance your comprehension, it is important to respectfully listen, discuss, and debate differing points of view. At this point, fiction and nonfiction text come alive!
